Smart Infrastructure: The New R2 Expressway Segment

More Than Just a Road
Yesterday's opening of the new R2 Kriváň – Mýtna expressway segment (November 20, 2025) brought not only relief to drivers but also a technological premiere. This segment is the first in Slovakia designed from the ground up as a "Smart Highway".
IoT Under the Asphalt
What makes this road smart? It's not just cameras.
- In-road Weather Sensors: Every 500 meters, sensors embedded in the asphalt measure surface temperature, humidity, and freezing point. This data is sent in real-time to a central system, which automatically doses spreading material for maintenance vehicles.
- Adaptive Lighting: LED lighting on bridge structures communicates with light intensity and fog sensors. If visibility is good and traffic is zero, the lighting dims to 20%, saving energy.
V2X: The Road That Talks to the Car
The biggest innovation is the pilot operation of the V2X (Vehicle-to-Everything) system. Vehicles equipped with this technology (most new models from 2024 onwards) receive alerts directly on the dashboard about:
- Road work around a bend.
- Approaching emergency vehicles.
- Sudden changes in weather conditions.
The Slovak Footprint
We are proud that the software solution for collecting and evaluating this data was supplied by a consortium of Slovak IT companies. It turns out that our know-how in Big Data and IoT is competitive at the European level.
This R2 segment is not just about faster travel. It is proof that infrastructure and technology can go hand in hand for the greater safety of us all.
